Thanks to the generous support of the Barney and Rachel Gottstein Foundation of the Jewish Federation Bay Area, the “Pele” Educational & Empowerment Program continues to provide children in Netanya’s Hefziba neighborhood with educational support, enrichment activities, and a safe environment in which to learn, grow, and thrive.

Originally established in 2012, the “Pele” Educational & Empowerment Program was renewed in September 2025 in the Hefziba neighborhood of Netanya, thanks to the generous support of the Barney and Rachel Gottstein Foundation of the Jewish Federation Bay Area.

The Hefziba neighborhood is home primarily to families from Netanya’s Ethiopian community, many of whom face significant socio-economic challenges. The program was created to provide children with educational support, enrichment opportunities, and a safe environment in which they can grow, succeed, and build confidence in their abilities.

Today, the program serves children in grades 1–6 and operates throughout the school year. Students receive academic support in subjects such as Hebrew, mathematics, English, and computers, with learning taking place in small groups that allow for personal attention and encouragement. Beyond academics, the program offers enrichment activities that promote creativity, leadership, social skills, and emotional resilience.

For many of the children, “Pele” provides far more than educational assistance - it offers a sense of belonging, stability, and opportunity. The program helps bridge educational gaps while empowering children to believe in themselves and their future. Parent involvement is also encouraged, strengthening the connection between families, schools, and the wider community.

Over the years, former participants of the program have gone on to become active community members, youth leaders, and volunteers, reflecting the long-term impact of the initiative.

The program takes place at the Hefziba Community Center, which was renovated with the support of the Archie Sherman Charitable Trust in honor of Zewdu Zegeye, providing children with a welcoming and supportive learning environment.

The renewed launch of “Pele” marks an important investment in the future of Hefziba’s children and families, and reflects the Netanya Foundation’s ongoing commitment to creating educational opportunity and strengthening community resilience
